After getting ticketed should I expect increased car insurance premiums?

The obvious answer is, “Yes.” To determine how much it’s going to go up is a question I cannot answer, nor can your local insurance agent.

Each insurance company has different thresholds for when they determine when somebody’s insurance rate will go up. There are a ton of variables that come into play in this. Other variables, including infractions, are your age, your race, your marital status, your address, the make and model of your car.

One thing is clear. A person that does not have the traffic infractions on his record will not be paying the same amount as somebody who has a ton of traffic infractions on their record. When you have a lot of traffic infractions, you’re determined to be a high-risk driver and your rates will go up.

I tell clients after doing some research, that one traffic infraction will take your insurance premiums up about 13 percent. That runs about anywhere from 1,000 to 1,300 dollars over a span of three years.

It’s important to remember at a traffic infraction in the State of Washington will stay on your record for three years. Insurance companies will have access to that infraction for three years down the road after it goes on your record.
